How 12 Steps to Freedom Recovery Works

HOW THE 12 STEPS TO FREEDOM PROGRAM WORKS

The 12 Steps to Freedom Recovery Program is more than a list of steps.
It is a guided journey of transformation that begins inside prison and prepares participants for lasting freedom beyond the walls.

This Christ-centered program is designed to meet individuals exactly where they are and walk them forward—step by step—toward real, lasting change through Jesus Christ. Freedom doesn’t start on release day. Freedom begins on the inside.

1. Breaking Through Denial – Laying the Foundation

Before the 12 Steps even begin, participants work through a Foundations Section focused on denial.

This stage helps individuals:

  • Admit they have a problem

  • Recognize destructive thinking patterns

  • Take personal responsibility without shame or condemnation

  • Understand how addiction, trauma, and behavior are connected

Many people remain stuck not because they are unwilling to change—but because they are unable to see the truth clearly. Freedom begins with truth.

This phase clears the ground for real change and prepares the heart and mind for transformation.

2. Walking Through the 12 Steps – Healing and Restoration

After denial is addressed, participants begin walking through the 12 Steps to Freedom, each step firmly rooted in biblical truth.

These steps guide individuals to:

  • Surrender control to God

  • Develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ

  • Address past wounds, guilt, and resentment

  • Learn accountability and spiritual discipline

  • Experience forgiveness, healing, and restoration

The 12 Steps are not rushed. They are walked through intentionally, allowing God to work deeply in areas that often remain untouched.

3. Climbing the Mountain – Change Starts Before Release

A key message of this program is simple but powerful:

The climb begins inside prison.

Participants are challenged to:

  • Stop using drugs while incarcerated

  • Change thinking patterns now—not later

  • Build discipline, integrity, and spiritual maturity

  • Learn how to live differently before returning to society

Instead of waiting for freedom to change, participants learn to change in order to live free.

4. Preparing for Life Beyond Prison – Facing Reality Head-On

As participants near the end of the program, the focus shifts to reentry and real-world challenges.

This section addresses:

  • Fear and uncertainty about release

  • Temptation, old environments, and old relationships

  • Employment, housing, and accountability

  • Church connection and ongoing recovery support

Participants are taught that freedom must be maintained, not assumed. They learn practical and spiritual tools to stand firm when pressure comes.

5. Thinking Bigger – Living a Purpose-Driven Life

The final stage of the program challenges participants to think beyond survival.

They are encouraged to:

  • Discover God’s purpose for their life

  • Understand that their past does not disqualify them

  • Learn how God uses broken people to help others

  • Become leaders, mentors, and examples of transformation

Freedom is not just about staying clean—it’s about living with purpose.

A Program Built on Hope, Truth, and Jesus Christ

The 12 Steps to Freedom Program is built on the belief that:

  • No one is too broken to be redeemed

  • Real change is possible through Christ

  • Prison does not define a person’s future

  • Freedom is a process, not an event

This program doesn’t just prepare inmates to get out of prison—it prepares them to stay free..
